AT&T up close

8-20-15    One leaked (by Snowden) internal NSA newsletter importantly notes that AT&T began providing the NSA with over 1.1 billion domestic cellphone records in 2011 after “a push to get this flow operational prior to the 10th anniversary of 9/11.”  …

President Gerald Ford in June 1976 personally intervened to block the (Congressional subcommittee to AT&T) subpoena, stating that AT&T “was and is an agent of the United States acting under contract with the Executive Branch.” https://nsarchive.wordpress.com/2015/08/20/over-900-kissinger-telcons-released-thanks-to-archive-foia-suit-the-nsas-highly-productive-relationship-with-att-and-much-more-frinformsum-8202015-2/

12-17-15    AT&T and IBM today announced they are expanding their long-term strategic relationship to bring businesses a full suite of advanced networking, application and hosting services.  Under the agreement, AT&T will transition its managed application and managed hosting services unit to IBM.  IBM will then align these managed service capabilities with the IBM Cloud portfolio.   IBM will also acquire equipment and access to floor space in AT&T data centers currently supporting the applications and managed hosting operations.

Together, AT&T and IBM will enable companies to more easily integrate networks and cloud workloads with their IT environments.  After close, IBM will deliver the managed applications and managed hosting services AT&T provides today.  AT&T will continue to provide networking services including security, cloud networking and mobility that it provides today.  And the two companies will work closely to innovate and deliver a full suite of integrated solutions to customers.

“Today’s announcement represents an expansion of our strategic relationship with AT&T and continuing collaboration to deliver new innovative solutions,” said Philip Guido, IBM General Manager of Global Technology Services for North America.  “Working with AT&T, we will deliver a robust set of IBM Cloud and managed services that can continuously evolve to meet clients’ business objectives.”

“AT&T and IBM have worked together for nearly 20 years,” said Jon Summers, senior vice president, AT&T Mobile and Business Solutions.     http://about.att.com/story/att_and_ibm_expand_strategic_relationship.html

8-22-15    AT&T provided technical assistance in carrying out a secret court order permitting the wiretapping of all Internet communications at the United Nations headquarters, a customer of AT&T.   (For $10 million AT&T supplies CIA with overseas phone data).

The N.S.A.’s top-secret budget in 2013 for the AT&T partnership was more than twice that of the next-largest such program, according to the documents.  The company installed surveillance equipment in at least 17 of its Internet hubs on American soil, far more than its similarly sized competitor, Verizon.  And its engineers were the first to try out new surveillance technologies invented by the eavesdropping agency.  http://www.911truth.org/att-helped-us-spy-on-internet-on-vast-scale/

AT&T’s participation in these (CIA of overseas phone data) investigations is voluntary.  They are under no obligation to hand them over, but an extra $10 million/year (from CIA) is awfully tempting.

This still falls under the NSA rules that we had heard about previously, so the US number is blanked out and only the metadata — time and length of call, foreign number called, etc — is released.  There is no call recording, per se.   That being said, the CIA has more “freedom” to operate in certain ways than the NSA.   http://www.mobilemag.com/2013/11/07/att-hands-foreign-call-logs-cia-10-million-per-year/

AT&T (NYSE: T) on Tuesday began offering a broader suite of networking services to multinational corporations that are expanding their presence in China through its long-running relationship with carrier partner China Telecom (NYSE: CHA).

These new service initiatives build off a long-running relationship between the two service providers which began in 2000, when they formed the Shanghai Symphony Telecommunications Co. (SST) joint venture.

In November 2011, the two telcos expanded their relationship, allowing China Telecom to improve services to Asian customers in the United States over AT&T’s network. …

The two service providers have established a network to network interconnect (NNI) agreement in New York and San José, Calif., which enables China Telecom to expand its own Ethernet and MPLS in the United States and major international cities to serve a number of Chinese-based multinational corporations (MNCs).  http://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/at-t-and-china-telecom-serving-up-new-international-business-services-suite

AT&T’s top lobbyist says he’s throwing his support behind Hillary Clinton for President. AT&T has made it clear that it dislikes most of the current FCC’s proposals, ranging from new net neutrality rules and a higher 25 Mbps definition of broadband, to agency plans to embrace municipal broadband or bring more competition to the cable box.  That makes it particularly notable that Cicconi, frequently an outspoken critic of pro-consumer initiatives over at the AT&T policy blog, would back a candidate that’s likely to continue these kinds of initiatives.

In fact, Cicconi’s vote for Clinton would be the first time he’s not voted for a GOP candidate since 1976, according to a Clinton campaign memo provided to the Wall Street Journal.   “This year I think it’s vital to put our country’s well being ahead of party,” Cicconi said in a statement provided by the campaign.  “Hillary Clinton is experienced, qualified, and will make a fine president.  The alternative, I fear, would set our nation on a very dark path.”    http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATTs-Top-Lobbyist-Backs-Hillary-Clinton-137272
