8-24-16    the fighting in Colombia has killed more than 220,000 over the past five decades, according to government tallies.  Nearly 7 million Colombians have been driven from their homes — the highest number of what the United Nations considers “internally displaced people” (IDPs) in the world. And Colombians will continue to be maimed long after the war ends by land mines, which have killed or injured more than 11,000 people since 1990.  That is second-highest number of land mines in the world after Afghanistan.

Rebels in arms:  Flush with cocaine profits, by the late 1990s the FARC was at its peak, with nearly 20,000 fighters.  It terrorized Colombians with kidnappings, bombings and brazen attacks that came to represent a major threat to the government, controlling as much as one-quarter of Colombian territory.  But the FARC’s tactics and its criminal reputation earned it little support among the ordinary Colombians on whose behalf it was supposedly fighting.  As the state fought back and FARC soldiers grew fearful of increasingly effective military airstrikes, the rebel ranks thinned, with many defecting or deserting.  Today the FARC has fewer than 7,000 troops, according to Colombian military intelligence.

…For a time Colombia became the world’s No. 2 producer, after Peru.  But it was not to last.  In the past two years, as the FARC and the government negotiated their deal (in Havana, Cuba–but the deal was rejected by popular referendum lately) the size of the country’s illegal coca crop has doubled, and Colombia harvests more than Peru and third-place Bolivia combined.        https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/08/24/the-staggering-toll-of-colombias-war-with-farc-rebels-explained-in-numbers/

Thousands of Colombians Rally Against Amnesty for FARC Guerrilla Fighters

“Colombia wants peace, but without impunity,” Uribe told the crowd in Medellin.  “We call on the army to support us by fighting and defeating the guerrillas, whether the government wants it or not,” he said.

Opponents of the peace negotiations created a petition — which accumulated 1,500 signatures in two days — demanding that Santos punish the “terrorists” rather than giving them political clout.

“President Santos:  you don’t have to de-escalate any conflict because there is not a conflict,” the petition said.  “There are delinquents who merit the weight of the law.  We don’t want the perpetrators of kidnappings, assassinations and extortion to remain unpunished.”       https://news.vice.com/article/thousands-of-colombians-rally-against-amnesty-for-farc-guerrilla-fighters

          Is Government Ethics an Oxymoron?

Cronyism is a more specific form of favoritism, referring to partiality towards friends and associates.  As the old saying goes, “It’s not what you know but who you know,” or, as blogger Danny Ferguson put it, “It’s not what you don’t know; it’s who your college roommate knows.”  Cronyism occurs within a network of insiders–the “good ol’ boys,” who confer favors on one another.

Nepotism is an even narrower form of favoritism.  Coming from the Italian word for nephew, it covers favoritism to members of the family.  Both nepotism and cronyism are often at work when political parties recruit candidates for public office.

One of the most basic themes in ethics is fairness, stated this way by Artistotle:  “Equals should be treated equally and unequals unequally.”  Favoritism, cronyism and nepotism all interfere with fairness because they give undue advantage to someone who does not necessarily merit this treatment.

In the public sphere favoritism, cronyism and nepotism also undermine the common good.  When someone is granted a position because of connections rather than because he or she has the best credentials and experience, the service that person renders to the public may be inferior.         https://www.scu.edu/ethics/focus-areas/government-ethics/resources/what-is-government-ethics/favoritism-cronyism-and-nepotism/

11-18-13        The 2013 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) by the Office of Personnel Management, released earlier this month, found that 49% of government workers said their agency allows partiality and pressure to conform to partisan politics.

Only 51% of respondents agreed with the statement “arbitrary action, personal favoritism, and coercion for partisan political purposes are not tolerated.”

The federal government is also far from operating on a merit-based system, based on the answers to the 84-question survey.               http://freebeacon.com/issues/nearly-half-of-government-employees-say-favoritism-political-coercion-tolerated/

It is possible to make a reasonable argument to protect traditional marriage and oppose the legalization of homosexual marriage without appealing to the Bible.  This argument is as follows:

1.  Traditional marriage is beneficial to the public welfare.    2. Homosexual behavior is destructive to the public welfare.

3.  The law is a great teacher; it encourages or discourages behavior and attitudes.    4. Legalization of homosexual marriage would encourage more homosexual behavior, which is inherently destructive.  It also would weaken the perceived importance of traditional marriage and its parenting role, thereby resulting in further destruction of the family and society itself.

5.  The law should endorse behaviors that are beneficial and restrain (or certainly not endorse) behaviors that are destructive.     6. Therefore the law should endorse traditional marriage and it should restrain (or certainly not endorse) homosexual marriage.

Life to us is sweet and still sweet….Vast is the potential of the light in the heart of the devotee.   Dark, dark is the long night of the tyrants’ self-imposed terror.  How well I remember the last days of Atlantis.  Those of us who were there keeping the vigil midst the efforts of the lightbearers have recently gathered at the Royal Teton Retreat to closely examine the causes and conditions that led to that final judgment and that sinking of a continent and its people.

The evildoers then and now continue in their evildoing right up to the eve of cataclysm, boasting that they are immune to God’s Laws, that karma is not real, and that they are the gods of the Earth….

The securing of spiritual forcefields in matter is the work of the chelas (devotees) of the ascended masters.  When decay and disintegration beset an age they mount with wings as eagles’ to survey the land and the sea….2×2 is 4, and 4 squared is 16.  Even so the mathematics of the Pyramid (of Life)  and of the 33 steps of the temple stairs is unerring.  The design of the degrees of the flowers and of fohatic (intense concentrated fire) keys are unchanging, just as the cycles of the stars and the 10,000 year cycles of the initiations of planetary lightwaves are unchanging….

Draw the hallowed circle of protection about thy life and thy service and do not allow that circle to be violated by the violent who would take the fruits from the initiative tree.             -Nada:  Pearls of Wisdom 23:6
