2014 report on neurotoxins; pesticides in China; scorpion gene in cabbage; EPA approves 2,4-D herbicide-blend

2014 report on neurotoxins:  http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/03/the-toxins-that-threaten-our-brains/284466/

62,000 chemicals already on the market (decades ago…in that era’s law) no toxicity testing was required of them. These chemicals were, as Landrigan puts it, “simply presumed safe” and allowed to remain in commerce until a substantial health concern came to public attention.

In the nearly 40 years since the law’s passage, more than 20,000 new chemicals have entered the market. “Only five have been removed,” Landrigan says….

The combined current levels of pesticides, mercury, and lead cause IQ losses amounting to around $120 billion annually—or about three percent of the annual budget of the U.S. government (says economist Elise Gould).

6-25-15  Campaigners say that China has an exemplary set of environmental protection legislation, but that close ties between business and officials mean that it is rarely enforced at a local level.

Beijing University of Science and Technology economics professor Hu Xingdou said there are few incentives for Chinese farmers to stick to the law when raising lucrative crops, however.

Chinese officials are either apathetic about enforcing the rules on pesticides, or they form part of corrupt protection networks that shield their members from the law, he said.

“The punishments for this sort of thing aren’t very severe in China,” Hu said. “Also, 99.9 percent of people are being protected from them.”

“It costs a lot to stick to the law, and very little to break it. There is very little enforcement capability.”     http://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/herbs-06252013110158.html

6-3-2014  the biotechnology industry manipulates the government to pass its products and thus gets the FDA to allow improperly tested genetically modified pesticides to be sprayed on plants or genes of non-plant organisms to be inserted into the DNA of food sources.  http://www.projectcensored.org/scorpion-genes-genetically-modified-food/

9-3-2013   an estimated 60-80% of processed foods in American grocery stores currently contain GMOs, and they are not required to be labeled on the package.

4-26-2012  “It’s clear that this new generation of GE herbicide-resistant seeds is the growth engine of the pesticide industry’s sales and marketing strategy,” said Marcia Ishii-Eiteman, Senior Scientist at Pesticide Action Network. “These seeds are part of a technology package explicitly designed to facilitate increased, indiscriminate herbicide use and pump up chemical sales.”  http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/press-releases/705/usda-receives-over-365000-public-comments-opposing-approval-of-24-d-resistant-genetically-engineered-corn#

EPA Approves New 2,4-D Herbicide Blend, Paving Way for Controversial GE Crops

2,4-D, produced by Dow Chemical, was a component of “Agent Orange,” the toxic defoliant used in Vietnam. It is the 7th largest source of dioxins in the U.S.  2,4-D and other herbicides of its class have been independently associated with deadly immune system cancersParkinson’s diseaseendocrine disruption, and reproductive problems, with children at particular risk….Over a million citizens have also voiced their opposition (to this g.m. pesticide poisoning to FDA) this year.

USDA’s own analysis concedes that approval of 2,4-D-resistant corn and soybeans will lead to an unprecedented 2 to 7 fold increase in agricultural use of 2,4-D by 2020,    http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/press-releases/3536/epa-approves-new-24-d-herbicide-blend-paving-way-for-controversial-ge-crops#
